Brain and Body Benefits of Sleep||The Benefits of Sleeping Less

Sleep is a necessity for a healthy life. Other people may not agree with this, but there is nothing more important than healthy sleep.

It is so vital for your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. When it comes to sleep, there are many different things you can do for yourself.

For example,

you can have a bedtime routine, try to get more sunlight, or eat healthy foods.

Sleep

Sleep is often an overlooked topic and a difficult one to talk about. There are many different types and different reasons for sleep. It has a big impact on our health. This is a blog to talk about sleep and the different types, from deep sleep to REM sleep.

While sleep may seem like an easy activity, it's an important aspect of living that's often overlooked. Those with sleep deprivation often become irritable and find it difficult to concentrate. Sleep deprivation can also lead to weight gain and loss of mental clarity.

The proper amount of sleep that we need is highly debated and hard to come by these days. The idea of needing a certain amount of sleep every night is not a new concept. It's a requirement that has been around since the first days of humans trying to survive.

Brain and Body Benefits of Sleep

There are numerous positives of quality sleep for both mental and physical health.

Even though our dreams have been widely misunderstood for a while, they’re far more significant than a normal night of rest allows us to see.

Short sleep has become the norm for so many people these days that people no longer even remember what life was like when people regularly got a good night’s sleep.

On the other hand, I’ve read stories in the news about people who are so tired they can’t remember what happened during the day, and the cause of this is not getting enough sleep.

Now, that’s no excuse, and some people have taken steps to get their sleep schedules back to what it once was, however for many people this is unrealistic and usually, only a way to get a certain person’s attention, which they are then unsuccessful in changing the other person’s behavior, let alone their own. What’s more, according to the National Sleep Foundation (NSF), only 13 percent of adults get the recommended seven to nine hours of sleep each night. As you can imagine this is affecting many areas of their lives.

This impact doesn’t only apply to the individual, but also their loved ones, the workplace, and society as a whole.

The most recent statistics from NSF found that a lack of sleep affects the lives of approximately one in every three adults, and those affected are more likely to have a reduced sense of alertness and attention, higher rates of depression and obesity, poor interpersonal relationships, low productivity at work, increased incidences of motor vehicle accidents and a heightened risk of diabetes.

These adverse effects are causing people to be less present and make more mistakes. This is no exaggeration. As the foundation’s president, Dr. Jeannette Daher, said, “There are adverse effects from sleep deprivation that are similar to alcohol or drugs.”

The Benefits of Sleeping Less

The Benefits of Sleeping Less This is not good news at all. A Canadian study shows that people who sleep less than 6 hours a night are more prone to disease and other health problems than those who get a full night’s sleep.

They are also more likely to be obese. This comes as no surprise as it has long been known that a lack of sleep can cause fatigue, moodiness, lack of focus, poor memory, and impaired immune function.

The new research, published in the journal PLOS ONE, comes from a meta-analysis of 11 sleep studies which has also revealed that children who sleep for less than 6 hours a night are also more likely to become obese later in life.

They are also more likely to become obese than their counterparts who get a full night’s sleep. Not sleeping for a whole night is bad for you but how much is uncertain. ” This means that if you can get more sleep, even if it is less, you will have better health and that could save you a fortune.

Sleeping less for 6 hours a night costs the average US$863 a year, while those who sleep for the recommended 7 hours will save $2,604. To examine the sleep deprivation risk factor, the researchers extracted the sleep data of people involved in 11 clinical trials which were over 10 years old.

They examined the participants’ health and BMI (body mass index). They were able to determine whether a person’s sleep pattern was healthy by looking at BMI, sleep duration, sleep efficiency, sleep duration/exposure to light, and various health indicators.

The Benefits and Dangers of Sleeping Less

We all know the benefits of sleep: Increased memory, immune function, memory recall, better control over blood sugar, and reductions in chronic pain, obesity, and other ailments.

But while a lack of sleep has been shown to increase dementia risk in older adults, it can also be beneficial in stimulating the mind—and the body. Of course, sleep deprivation is dangerous and even deadly; experts have linked long-term sleep deprivation with an increased risk for heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and depression.

A 2007 study by researchers at Baylor University found that for every additional hour of sleep missed, a person’s risk of having a heart attack went up by a whopping 16%. Researchers also found that for every 1.5 hours of sleep lost, their risk of dying from any cause increased by 5 percent.

It’s not hard to imagine that, if insomnia is already a major concern for many people, these results would cause some serious insomnia.

Now here’s where things get a little more complicated. Despite the detrimental effects of sleep deprivation, it can help, experts say. Research on mice conducted by the University of Surrey found that not sleeping resulted in mental deterioration that led to cognitive decline similar to the effects of aging.

Not only does this suggest that sleep is critical for mental health, but it could mean that sleepless nights in the short term could be followed by mental benefits in the long term.

That’s a bit of an issue for those of us who are perpetually sleep-deprived and can’t see ourselves ever feeling rested enough to feel energized: There are just so many benefits we’d miss out on by giving up sleep.
